Walleye eggs are stripped from a female when she is ready to release them. They are placed “dry” into a pan and milt (sperm) is added then the two are mixed together. Water is added which activates the sperm. The eggs have approximately 20 seconds for the sperm to penetrate the open on the egg called the micropyle. After 20 seconds the egg begins to harden and the micropyle begins to close. At this point fertilization is no longer possible.
